THE HIVE: Educational Initiative Launched at In The City To Inspire Younger Delegates

In The City are very pleased to announce details of an exciting new programme of educational events designed for a younger generation of delegates looking for an entry point into the music industry. The Hive is aimed at providing a stimulating, informative and thought provoking programme for students, emerging artists and budding entrepreneurs (16+) and will take place on the 13th and 14th October in The Malmaison Hotel in Manchester.

The Hive will feature panels, seminars and workshops led by a host of industry professionals, covering a wide range of topics including artist management, music publishing, understanding the media, songwriting, studio production and many others.

Confirmed events for The Hive include:

The CMU Seminars
Chris
Cooke, editor of esteemed music industry trade publication CMU Daily and founder of Unlimited Media, presents the CMU Seminars, giving delegates the lowdown on everything they need to know from a beginners guide to copyright, to getting a job in music, to making money from the music industry.

The Music Managers’ Panel
The
role of a music manager has morphed dramatically in recent years as roles, responsibilities and commitments begin merging together. If you are a manager just starting out, what should your aims and objectives be? How do you go about getting your artists the recognition they deserve and if they get it how will that change your role?

My Generation, Next Generation
Drowned in Sound founder Sean Adams and Oliver Clueit, founder of My Band Is Better Than Your Band, host a discussion on the evolution of music blogging. In the years since it first came to the fore giving a voice to the impassioned music masses, blogging has grown to become one of the most important and influential forms of new media. Not only has it documented the tastes, talent and transitions of the last ten years, but it has helped create them. Now in a more powerful position than ever before, the panel will discuss the influence blogging will have on the next generation of trends.

‘Routine’ With Tommy D
Tommy D, the man behind chart smashes by the likes of Kylie Minogue, Kanye
West and Jay-Z, brings his 'Routine' masterclass to The Hive. ‘Routine’ sees Tommy producing a band in a live environment offering invaluable professional knowledge and advice on how a band can improve their sound before heading into the studio. This unique session will allow Hive delegates an unrivaled insight into one of the most important aspects of the creative process from one of the most respected producers in the industry. Find out more information about Tommy and his work here.

The Musicians' Union Guide to Doing It Yourself

quite know how to do it? The Musicians’ Union talks Hive delegates through the whys and wherefores of going it alone in the music industry.

The Northern Song Collective Songwriting Masterclass

take you through the creative process of songwriting with a few industry
heavyweights. Jim Spencer, producer of Jonny Marr and The Charlatans, will join Mercury Prize nominated John Bramwell from I Am Kloot with more participants to be announced shortly.

Mandy Parnell’s Mastering Masterclass

Saloon studios, from Badly Drawn Boy to Faithless, James to Missy Elliot. Mandy will be presenting her ‘Before & After Mastering Masterclass’ to Hive delegates in the Rockhopper, a 34-foot long purpose built recording studio.

The Untapped Goldmine: The Importance Of Publishing

Whenever your songs are played in public you should be getting a cut, but how do you go about getting it? We let you in on the secret.

Heavy What? HeavyFeet & Stamp! Beats Present The New Way Of Thinking
Manchester-based production duo, HeavyFeet (Bingo/Skint/Trouble & Bass), present an hour long case study of their new record label, Stamp! Beats, centring on their reasons for giving much of the label's output away for free,
the importance of creative collaboration with artists from other genres, maintaining media and PR hype, why mid-level artists should control
their own output and finances, and having the guts to go where other artist-run labels haven't gone before.

Learning How To Sell Yourself: The Art Of Networking
They say it’s not what you know, but who you know. But if you’re just starting out in the business you aren’t going to know anyone. How do you know who to approach and what to approach them about? How do you make your pitch and once you’re in, how do you take it on to the next step? Industry professional Phil Ellis is joined by Karen Holden (UKTI) and Shaun Arnold (Director of Rockness/Go North Festival) to show you the best way of selling yourself.

The In The City Hive is a separately ticketed event from the traditional In The City Conference with passes priced at just £60. This includes free entry to all In The City live events across 13th - 15th October.
